  • Email and Spam - Some Solutions(7/9/2007)
You are probably fed up with the amount of Spam you receive each day. It fills up your inbox, takes time to delete, and can sometimes contain malicious attachments.

How can you tell if something is Spam without opening it? The subject line is usually a give away. Also, the sender is someone you may not recognize. Spam does not give you a way to remove yourself from the mailing list. And finally, you cannot reply to Spam.

While many modern email clients offer junk filters, you still need to go through the items marked junk and separate out good email. Because these filters come with your software, the Spam filtering functions are basic at best.

Fortunately, there are a number of software and hardware solutions to the Spam problem. Alon Systems can provide you with both types:

  • Sunbelt Software's iHateSpam:An Outlook add-in
    • Eliminates irritating junk email and phishing attempts.
    • Effective with Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express.
    • No lost messages - spam is quarantined until you delete.
    • Puts you in control of the email you receive.
  • SonicWall's Email Security:If you have your own email server, Sonicwall offers both software and hardware that deals with Spam. Email Security also performs other email security functions, such a monitoring email for viruses and creating rules for outgoing email.
    • Unparalleled Anti-spam detection
    • Anti-virus with time-zero technology and zombie detection
    • Anti-phishing with unique patent pending discovery techniques
    • World-wide real-time threat detection and prevention network
    • Powerful policy management
    • Connection Management for edge protection – DHA, DoS, tarpitting and more
    • Regulatory and corporate compliance ready – routing rules, record ID matching, approval boxes, dictionaries and more
    • Archiving, auditing, encryption support and more

  • Are You Ready for Vista?(7/1/2007)
Many computer users are now starting to switch over to Microsoft's new Operating system, Vista. Are you ready for the switch?

There are several factors to take into consideration before switching to Vista or bringing Vista computers into your network.
  • Hardware:Vista requires a very robust computer. The basic version requires a CPU that operates at a 1 GHz , 512 MB system memory, a graphics board that supports Direct X 9 and has 32 MB of memory, and 20 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB hard drive space available. The higher end versions require substantially more powerful hardware. In order to run Vista, you may need to spend some money upgrading or replacing your current desktops.
  • Peripherals: This seems to be Vista's weakest point. Many of the peripherals that are attached to your current setup (printers, scanners, USB drives, etc.) may not work with Vista. Peripheral manufacturers are working to update the software drivers to work with Vista, but it will be some time before many units are covered (and older ones may never work with Vista).
  • Software: This is also a problem with Vista. You will need new versions of security software (Antivirus, anti spyware, etc.). Some software packages may not work correctly. And if you have any customized software, you may be in for a bit of a rough time rewriting the application to make it work with Vista.
  • Stability:Vista is stable, but with any new Operating System there are bugs. Microsoft is releasing updates and fixes, but it will take a while for all the kinks to get worked out.

Vista is a wonderful product. There are many great features and it is definitely more secure than Windows XP. But you need to keep in mind the amount of money you may have to spend to get your office ready before you go out and buy.

If you do choose to migrate to Vista, Alon Systems can make sure all your hardware is ready and migrate your data to the new OS.

Give us a call if we can help.

  • Document Management(6/18/2007)
How do you manage your electronic documents?

Electronic documents are much easier to retrieve than their paper counterparts, yet we spend more time filing and archiving paper than we do organizing our workstations and networks.

One of the easiest ways to eliminate paper is by eliminating paper faxes. This is the role that a fax server can play in your organization. Outgoing faxes are sent electronically to the fax without using a single piece of paper. Incoming faxes are received on the fax server, then forwarded to the individual or group to which the fax was addressed.

Our FaxAlon™ fax server carries this concept to the next level:
  • Faxes are forwarded automatically, as the unit can be taught which individuals receive faxes sent from specific phone numbers
  • FaxAlon™ includes a document management system that allows users to assign account names or numbers and descriptions to sent and received faxes
  • The FaxAlon™ is upgradeable-your FaxAlon™ can take advantage of new features by using a simple download
  • FaxAlon™ is easy-no complicated licensing schemes, set up, or user interface

  • Helping Manage your business via Label Scanning(6/11/2007)
We have recently developed and fielded an application which involves Generating UPC codes, printing the labels and scanning them to help keep track of inventory.

This involved developing software which resides in the Label Scanning guns and works with PC and Server application modules.

If your organization has any need for similar applications, please contact us. We will be happy to provide you with any assistance you may need in that direction.
